More Money. More Possibilities.

I was deep in the church during those "name it and claim it" years when the evidence of your faith was determined by the size of your house and the make of your car. As much as I don't agree with that teaching, I also don't think many "good" and "faithful" Christians understand that money… Continue reading More Money. More Possibilities.

Sticks, Stones, and Names Can Kill You

You remember it. "Sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me." As I grew older I realized that this little saying was not true. Names, and the words we utter from our lips, can certainly hurt. Many people have suffered emotional harm from being called names. Beyond the emotional wounds,… Continue reading Sticks, Stones, and Names Can Kill You

Don’t Blame Oscar

While most of my twitter timeline is outraged about the Oscar Noms, there were a few good opposing arguments that I had to agree with. Awards are based on merit and performance. That's true. Follow the Little Voice, Not the Loud One

"Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant."  - Galatians 1:10 Obviously! Paul is pretty direct in his message to those foolish Galatians. His goal is to do the will of God, regardless of what people think. That… Continue reading Follow the Little Voice, Not the Loud One

Motherhood with Wisdom, Power, and Faith

In the current environment I'm fighting like Rizpah to keep the scavengers from tearing away at my sons-- their dignity, honor, self-esteem, self-image, and life itself. I have to watch police, politicians, teachers, coaches, store clerks, and strangers who might consider skittles to be dangerous. Every night I fall into bed, I thank God that my sons are alive and pray they live another day.  It's a real, not at all irrational, fear of this Black mother.

Just Like My Father

One of my favorite tactics when my mother asks me to come home and do something is to quote the Bible.  "A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family."  That's Matthew 13:57 (NLT).  It basically reinforces the old adage that familiarity breeds contempt.  Regardless of the books and… Continue reading Just Like My Father
