7 Steps to Start Healing

There is a difference between being “cracked” and broken to pieces. A cracked vase can still hold a candle and shine light. A vase that is broken to pieces needs to either be fixed or thrown away. The more broken pieces the less useful the vase becomes.  We are empty vases that are filled with the […]

How Do I Do Lent?

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Christian Lenten season. This is the day that we begin to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Easter Sunday. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday. Lent is 40 days of sacrifice modeled after the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert […]

Love Never Fails. Relationships Do.

1 Corinthians 13 is one of the most quoted love poems ever. Most importantly it reminds us that love never fails. I know. I know. Right now you are thinking about that person you loved dearly and it all fell apart. You’re thinking about the pain of your failed marriage. Love never fails. However, relationships […]

Don’t Blame Oscar

While most of my twitter timeline is outraged about the Oscar Noms, there were a few good opposing arguments that I had to agree with. Awards are based on merit and performance. That’s true. But when a merit (or penal) system is so glaringly disproportionate, the system is clearly broken. Consequently, we need to take a look at our intuitive human biases on an individual level to make systemic change.

Motherhood with Wisdom, Power, and Faith

In the current environment I’m fighting like Rizpah to keep the scavengers from tearing away at my sons– their dignity, honor, self-esteem, self-image, and life itself. I have to watch police, politicians, teachers, coaches, store clerks, and strangers who might consider skittles to be dangerous. Every night I fall into bed, I thank God that my sons are alive and pray they live another day.  It’s a real, not at all irrational, fear of this Black mother.

Just Like My Father

One of my favorite tactics when my mother asks me to come home and do something is to quote the Bible.  “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.”  That’s Matthew 13:57 (NLT).  It basically reinforces the old adage that familiarity breeds contempt.  Regardless of the books and […]

Do Not Give Up On God

In a time when our self-image and self-worth are challenged daily by social media highlight reels of people who seem to lead perfect, adventurous, well-maintained, lives with exceptional children and extraordinary marriages, it’s easy to focus on what’s wrong with our lives. Psalm 139 reminds us that even the things we think are “wrong” […]

Two Tips for Two Thousand Decisions

Psychology Today suggests that we make about two thousand decisions an hour. Can you imagine if you prayed over every decision during the day. Your prayer life would be Ah-mazing…and you could blame God for any mistakes along the way. Woot! The reality is that we don’t pray about each one of those two thousand […]

Cancel Your Trip to Perfection

Setting a goal because you “should” instead of focusing on what you “will” is why the train goes off the rails, spiraling you into an endless cycle of fixing life rather than living it.

Life Is Not Fair

“To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one bag — each according to his own ability.”  – Matthew 25:15 This passage from Matthew 25:14-30  is known as “The Parable of the Talents.”  The word “talent” is not referencing your ability to juggle eggs.  A talent is a measure of mass, […]

Pro-Choice Christians

Shine TYC is AUTHENTIC, BOLD, SMART, and COURAGEOUS and so we are not afraid to express our views.  We believe life begins before conception.  We believe you were a purpose before you were a person.  We also believe in a woman’s right to choose. Pro-Choice does not mean pro-abortion. As of late, people seem to be […]

Happy National Thesaurus Day Jesus

“Christ, Good Shepherd, King of Kings, Lamb of God, Lord, Lord of Lords, Messiah, Prince of Peace, Redeemer, Savior, Son of Man” It’s National Thesaurus Day!  It’s the day that Mark Roget – you know,  of Roget’s Thesaurus – was born.  You may be wondering to yourself, “How does one celebrate National Thesaurus Day?” Well, […]

4 Reasons Why I Believe in Jesus

In 1 Peter 3:15 we are told that we should be ready to explain our faith if asked.   I do not need to get into the deep theology and fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy to explain my belief. To me, it is a logical choice.   The Integrity of the Gospels The “biographies” of Jesus: […]
