5 Things I Write…And You Should, Too

I write for work. I write for relaxation. I write for study. I write as a way of life. It’s therapeutic and I encourage everyone to write. If you don’t know where to begin, here are some ideas.

I Write What God Has Done

Keeping a journal allows me to remember that life happens, time passes, and God is in control. I can revisit what I thought was deep love, crippling anxiety, or devastating disappointment and realize that it wasn’t nearly as bad as it felt in the moment. I write to remember how God brings me through each situation. You can use this writing as the basis for your gratitude prayers.

I Write My Reasons

When life gets loud, writing helps me hear the little voice inside of me rather than responding to the noise of the moment. Life’s trials can make you forget what you’re supposed to be doing and why. So, I’m careful to write down the reasons for my doing and being. The decisions we make in the peaceful calm of life are challenged when life gets tough. It’s helpful to know why you took the job, moved to that city, or married that man before making a decision quit.

I Write My Lessons

I want my life to matter. I want the lessons I’ve learned to be useful. My life journey is filled with teachable moments. Writing about these experiences helps me draw on them so that I can help other people. The books, blogs, and articles I’ve read over the years have been very useful to me. I hope to help others in the same way.

I Write What Makes Me Happy

In a world filled with all sorts of reasons to be mad, sad, or bad, I find it helpful to journal the good things. I have a “good days” journal and when I really hit a high note, I write it down. I write about movies I love and books that inspire me. I write about my happy places and the people who live there. Writing about the things you love helps lift your mood.

I Write What I Want

It’s amazing how what you want changes over the years. I keep a list of prayer requests and an “I Want” list. Oh Boy! When I look back on some of that stuff I’m glad God did not give it to me. This list also ties into my “What God Has Done” because I journal how my wants come to life. Make a list of things you want right now and watch your desires unfold. Revisit the list later to see how you’ve changed your mind.
