Authentic. Bold. Smart. Courageous. So why has it taken me so long to write about the Hollywood movement? The answer is short but not simple. I needed to pray.
YOU: “About what? It’s apparent who the monsters are.”
ME: “About seeing the world through the lens of my faith.”
Yes, the roles are easily identifiable and the infrastructure built to enable them is coming down brick by brick. But once a building comes down, there is a foundation that will either be destroyed or rebuilt. I’ve been praying about that it be destroyed.
Ephesians 6:12 tells us that “we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” So, as much as we all agree that Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, James Franco, and the others are all 100% absolutely wrong and need to be held strictly accountable, we are reminded of who the real enemy is and what he does. 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us that the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour. He got those guys and used them to break the women who were victimized.
Those of us who have given our lives to Christ have been filled with God’s spirit. Those who have not, are “someone to devour.”
So, I didn’t look at Weinstein or Spacey. Instead, I looked into the face of the enemy and prayed. I pray for the victims to be whole, for the predators to see the truth of who they are and to find out who God is through Jesus. I pray for the systematic web of complicity in Hollywood to be knocked to the ground with truth and righteousness. I pray for smart, bold, courageous people of God to come out of fear and stand up for the principles of their faith. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”
Let’s stop watching movies that glorify evil. These things desensitize us to real issues happening to real people. Consequently, something as vile and ghastly as rape becomes a hashtag movement. Let’s look to God for deliverance . We need more Esthers, Deborahs, Abigails, and yes, even imperfect Rahabs who know God and know when and how to fight. It’s time to embrace our full power as women and men of God and put the devil on notice. Move over #metoo there’s a new hashtag in vogue. #ITISFINISHED
To beat our enemy, we must to be willing to say “No” to projects that muddy our faith. We have to be willing to walk away from promotion if the cost is violation to our humanity. We have to shine light into darkness whether it involves us directly or not. We have to pray for the abused and the abusers. Most importantly, we have to see the real cause of all that is wrong in the world: Evil.
