We continue to find believers in Hollywood that are not ashamed of their faith. They are not ashamed to represent the gospel while giving their very best to the craft. Angela Bassett is one of those people. She’s a regular and active member of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ. Though you may not have seen her in traditionally faith-based roles, if you’ve ever seen her in an interview you know she is bold in discussing her faith. Bassett is credited with saying “When you realize that every breath is a gift from God. When you realize how small you are, but how much He loved you. That He, Jesus, would die, the Son of God himself on earth, you just weep.”
That statement tells us what Angela Bassett believes. Despite playing some pretty powerful and complex women on screen, Angela is a balanced woman who centers herself in the Christian faith. She understands that being a Hollywood star is nice but she makes sure not to idolize the trappings of the life.
Bassett tells Parade Magazine that she’s very deliberate in the parts she chooses to take. She chooses characters that start weak and end up strong. She says resilience is key. “It’s going down in the bad times and coming back again. Then you have a testimony.” Bassett understands how powerful testimony is to our faith and the faith of others. Growing up she attended Sunday School in addition to Wednesday night Bible study with her grandmother. This award-winning actress is yet another example of the importance of exposing our children to faith and training them in the way of Christ so that it will guide them for the rest of their lives.
Bassett believes that what we serve is the center of our existence. Many people serve fame and money and make bad decisions because of it. “All those things are nice but not if you serve them. They have the potential to devour.”
We love the power of Angela Bassett. We champion her on screen in her award winning performances as Tina Turner and Betty Shabazz, among others. Video game lovers can now enjoy her as “Six” in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. There seems to be no limit to her talent and range as an actress. We thank God for the testimony and witness of Angela Bassett.
